The Essential concept was inspired by the realisation that it is exceptionally difficult for independent owner-run hardware stores to compete against major hardware groups and franchises. Since independent retailers work in isolation they often cannot match prices, achieve the same levels of market penetration or acquire the skills of large chains and franchises competing in the Southern African hardware industry. Based on a voluntary trading model, the Essential Hardware Group was launched in January 2005 with the aim of networking independent, owner run hardware stores across South Africa, giving them access to the backing, marketing, buying and bargaining power of a consolidated group, whilst at the same time safeguarding their independence. <br/> <br/>
