Northfield, originally known as Northfield Distributors, was founded in 1947 by Jock Titterington,who moved to South Africa from Scotland in 1926 at the age of 21. The name Northfield was derived from a combination of two entities. Firstly, from a coal mine that Jock worked in before his move to South Africa, and secondly to the connotation being situated in North End, Port Elizabeth. In 1949, the brand's name was changed to Northfield Engineering. In 1956, the business started operating from its current premises in Dobson Street, North End Northfield started moving into the pumping sector with the designing and supplying of diesel driven pump sets, particularly with Petter engines of agriculture, and later into industrial and municipal application.in 1976, Alexander Archibald replaced Jock Titterington as Managing Director.
