Ilthokomeleng Association for the Aged and Disabled is based in Alexandra in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg. A home that cares for over ninety elders with 60% in the frail care unit, the home also admits disabled people, regardless of age. An escalating need for care of the elderly in the community was realised, and as such the home was established by a group of women from the community in 1978. Unfortunately the home falls outside of the Government’s capacity and is as thus very much self funding, relying on the generosity of others. Many elderly parents are destitute with no one to care for them and no resources to provide for their shelter, food and health needs. Their children are usually unemployed, due to a lack of e
