Lavender Hill High, a government school on the Cape Flats is situated in one of the most economically and culturally deprived areas of the Western Cape The school presently has 33 educators two admin and three estate staff members employed by the WCED In addition to this the school employs a further ten full-time and part-time employees to help with a variety of tasks and duties like security, cleaning and maintenance, feeding scheme and extra-mural activities Since the inception of the school it has faced many problems and challenges Many of the problems in the community such as substance abuse and gang violence are the consequence of the high levels of social dysfunction in the community To conquer the adverse effects of the learners challenging socio-economic circumstances the school has a range of programmes to support learners in transcending the limitations of the structural effects of poverty In spite of the many obstacles faced by the school it has much to celebrate
